Certain types of paint can spell the end for fabrics… or at least that’s what most people assume. Too many people discard upholstered furniture, carpet or garments the moment they’re hit with paint — when it isn’t always necessary.
Some delicate fibres such as silk and wool won’t withstand paint removal attempts, but many fabrics can be treated successfully if you act quickly and use the right method.
Note: These tips are last resorts. Always check manufacturer cleaning instructions before using any cleaning agents.
How to remove paint from fabric
Water and latex-based paints
If the paint is still wet, warm water and detergent may be enough to remove the stain. Apply gently using a sponge to avoid damaging fibres.
If the paint has dried, carefully scrape off as much as possible with a blunt knife before using warm soapy water. If the item is dry-clean only, take it to a professional cleaner immediately.
Oil-based paints
Oil-based paint is more difficult to remove. If wet, remove excess and gently blot with small amounts of turpentine. If dry, soften the paint first using a paint thinner. Always blot rather than scrub to protect the fabric.
Acrylic paint
Act quickly for best results. Rinse the stain with cold water, blot with a sponge, then apply warm soapy water. Continue blotting and, if needed, add a small amount of white vinegar to help lift the stain.
