How to clean grout

While cleaning bathroom tiles is relatively easy, keeping the grouting between them clean is far more challenging. Unlike smooth tiles, grout is porous and can harbour grime, mildew, limescale and soap scum if not maintained regularly.

Many people turn to strong chemical cleaners, but these can be harsh, produce fumes and damage surfaces. Fortunately, there are effective alternatives that use simple household ingredients and steam cleaning.

Steam cleaning your grouting for the first time

If there is a significant build-up of dirt, mould or soap scum, you may need to pre-treat the grout before steam cleaning. A simple and effective solution can be made using baking soda and white vinegar. Gradually mix vinegar into baking soda to form a thick paste, then apply it generously to the grout lines. Leave the paste for around 45 minutes before scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush. This helps break down grime and mildew. Rinse the tiles thoroughly before moving on to steam cleaning.

Using steam to clean grout

A handheld steam cleaner is ideal for reaching tight spaces and grout lines.

  • Fill the water tank and allow the unit to heat up
  • Use a direct steam nozzle for targeted cleaning
  • Work methodically across grout lines to break down dirt and stains
  • For stubborn areas, switch to a small scrubbing brush attachment and clean while applying steam

The heat from the steam helps loosen grime and kill bacteria without the need for harsh chemicals. Once finished, wipe away any remaining moisture with a microfibre cloth. Because steam uses minimal water, surfaces should dry quickly.

Regular steam cleaning can help prevent build-up and keep grout looking fresh. With consistent maintenance, you can avoid the need for strong cleaning chemicals altogether.
